Shops
The ferries bring fresh produce, such as meat, vegetables and milk, at midday on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Wednesday is the best day with the most goods so it can be wise to go shopping in the afternoons of those days for the pick of the bunch.
Berneray Shop & Bistro
Monday - Saturday: 9am - 5:30pm
Nearest shop to the lodge. Licensed. Limited stock but of very good quality.
Solas Co-Op
Monday - Saturday: 7am - 10pm
Best selection in North Uist. Has most things but it is very popular so it really is a case of first come first served. They are constantly stocking the shelves and can be rather overcrowded. Also sells papers, magazines, drinks and cigarettes.
Lochmaddy Stores
Monday - Saturday: 9am - 6pm
Sunday: Call for opening hours
This is the nearest petrol station to the house. Somewhat expensive and quite small. The butcher is in the back of the shop and it is probably best to order things in advance. Check when he is open as it may be mornings only.
Hebridean Smokehouse
Monday - Friday: 8am - 5:30pm
Excellent selection of peat smoked products, frozen fish and gifts.
Bayhead Stores
Monday - Saturday: 8am - 6pm
It has a reputation of being a very good shop, but it is the farthest away from the house on the island. If you were over on the west side might be worth taking a look at. Petrol pumps and a Post Office can be found here as well.
Kallin Shellfish
Monday - Friday: 9am - 4pm
Saturday: 11am - 2pm
This shop on Grimsay sells fresh fish and venison and duck eggs and Scallops. It is possible to order fresh fish which comes from the Barra Fishermen. It is obviously dependent on weather and what they catch. Ring on Monday or Wednesday mornings to order things but worth a try at other times as well. Better to ring rather than go on spec.
Shellfish from Uist Fishermen Co-Op
This is at the Kallin fishing boat jetty. It is possible to buy large prawns and lobsters here. It might be possible to buy lobsters and sometimes fish directly from the fishermen. It is always worth going down to the harbour on Berneray where the fishing boats come in and asking if they have anything. A bit of potluck as to the timing but give it a go.
Shellfish from Local Fishermen
It is worth asking in Ardmaree stores to find out who could provide fresh fish and shellfish. The fishermen’s co-op, Berneray Harbour, and Kallin shellfish will also be able to help here.
The Nicholson family fish for prawns from Lochmaddy old harbour and weather permitting they normally go out daily and get back between 4pm and 5:30pm. The large ones are simply the best.

Macleans Bakery & Butchers
Fresh bakery produce baked daily on Benbecula. They also stock some shops with various things, such as homemade oatcakes. They are on the way to the airport soon after you turn off the main north/south road.
Maclennans Supermarket
Monday - Saturday: 8am - 8pm
Sunday: 11am - 4pm.
This supermarket is located on Benbecula and stocks a wide range of goods at competitive prices, such as groceries, papers, hardware, clothing, stationery and dog food, as well as a good off-licence. Orders can be phoned through and they are very helpful. Mr Maclennan will try to get you things that you want.
Creagorry Co-Op
Monday - Saturday: 7am - 10pm
Sunday: 12:30pm - 10pm.
This is a bigger co-op than Solas but it is a long way to go. It is on Benbecula just before the causeway over to South Uist.
