🚘 Directions to Newton Lodge from Lochmaddy
From Lochmaddy ferry head south through town. After the school take the second right signposted Sollas and Otternish ferry to Leverburgh, Harris. Continue on this road for approximately 5 miles.
Turn right just after the quarry signposted to the ferry. Approximately 1½ miles after the turn to the cemetery, you will come up over the brow of the hill and there is a spectacular view towards Berneray and Harris.
About ½ mile on the left you will see a large white house with a few trees and a walled garden. Take the track to the left past some rather dilapidated farm buildings and a white cottage with a blue door and drive over the cattle grid to the house.
⛴️ Catching the ferry from Skye to North Uist
Caledonian Macbrayne operates the North Uist ferries, which run from Uig on Skye, landing at Lochmaddy, either once or twice a day. The journey takes 1 hour 45 minutes. You can also get a ferry from Leverburgh on Harris to Berneray, and drive south. Vehicle reservations are recommended.
🛣️ Getting to Skye from the Mainland
If you’re driving, you have two options - drive to Mallaig and catch the ferry to Skye, or drive further north to Kyle of Lochalsh and cross over via the bridge. The ferry from Mallaig to Skye takes 30 minutes and docks at Armadale. The views on the drive north are some of the most beautiful in Scotland.
You can also get a bus to Portree from Fort William, which takes 2 hours 30 minutes. Check Citylink for bus times.
✈️ Flying to Benbecula
Flybe operate flights from Glasgow on the mainland to neighbouring Benbecula. Public transport on the islands is quite limited, so hiring a car will let you get the most out of your trip. North Uist is connected to Benbecula via a causeway.

There are no car hire company desks at the airport. You need to book your car hire in advance, and they will meet you at the airport with your vehicle. On very rare occasions you can organise car hire upon arrival, although this will result in a wait. The car hire companies should be able to provide child booster seats upon request.
